People In Music History
Prokofiev, Sergey [Sergeyevich] (1891-1953) Russian composer, also pianist.
Pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov and others. Lived abroad from 1918 until settling
again in Russia in 1934; his style then became more straightforward and
"popular," e.g., in Peter and the Wolf and violin concerto no. 2. Nonetheless,
some of his later works, e.g., his symphony no. 6, were officially condemned
for "formalism" in 1948, along with works by other leading Soviet composers,
and his last opera The Story of a Real Man, was publicly produced only after
his death, 1960. His previous operas include The Fiery Angel, The Duenna, and
War and Peace. Also composed 7 symphonies (no. 1, Classical Symphony), 5 piano
concertos, 2 violin concertos, cello concerto, concertino sinfonia concertante
for cello and orchestra; Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, and other ballets;
songs, patriotic cantatas (e.g., Alexander Nevsky); 9 piano sonatas, 2 violin
sonatas and other instrumental works; film music.
